HISTORY

When we mention the name of Chiprovtsi, the glory of its ancient and rich history and the memory of the once great mining and craft-trade settlement shine before us. This cultural center has lived a colorful, multifaceted and dramatic life. It was once, and now is, the center of the famous and original Chiprovtsi carpets. Years ago, UNESCO declared the Chiprovtsi carpets a World Heritage Site in Paris.

The world-famous Chiprovtsi uprising of 1688 is also known. Three thousand insurgents gathered to fight for freedom against the Ottoman enslavers. In 1841 and 1870 the detachments of Panayot Hitov passed through these places. Leaders of popular uprisings were such famous figures and patriots as Peter Parchevich, Georgi Piachevich and Peter Bogdan Bakshev, born in Chiprovtsi in 1601-1674. This prominent and charming leader of the Bulgarian Catholic Church is known in history as a popular writer and translator. He spoke several languages and loudly proclaimed this picturesque mountain village with the figurative title "The Flower of Bulgaria".
