Traditional folklore celebrations and holidays

The oldest manifestation in the Pirot region, which still exists today, is the traditional Pirot Fair, which is held in Pirot in the period 28.8-30.8, during the city holiday and the religious holiday Assumption, which is celebrated very solemnly with liturgies. Patron and organizer of this event is the city of Pirot.

In the past, the Pirot Fair was widely known for the size and variety of goods sold: Pirot carpets, cattle and livestock products, handicrafts ... It lasted a month, ie. for half a month it was a cattle fair and half a goods fair. The first preserved record that speaks of the Pirot Fair is from 1611. The Pirot Fair is certainly the most beloved and most visited event among the people of Pirot.

The Pirot monasteries solemnly celebrate their saints, where, as in the past, a large number of Orthodox believers gather today: The Poganovo monastery in the village of Poganovo celebrates St. John the Theologian 9.10, Sukovo Monastery in the village of Sukovo Mala Gospozhina 21.9, Monastery of St. Petka Paraskeva in the village of Stanichenyu St. Petka Trnovitsa 8.8, Monastery of St. German in the village of Blato St. German 25.5

The Ironed Sausage Fair in Pirot is a gastronomic event that takes place every year, on the last weekend of January, lasts two days and brings together producers of ironed sausages. This event was established in 2012 and the organizers are the Association of Producers of Ironed Sausage from Pirot and the Tourist Organization of Pirot, under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

This year the fair was extremely well attended, had over 12,000 visitors and 39 exhibitors with their products. In addition to the stands with ironed sausage, the fair has a special section for the sale of wine and brandy and dairy products.

The food festival from the Balkan Mountains in the village of Temska near Pirot is a gastronomic event that takes place in July and lasts one day. Here you can see and try traditional dishes from the Balkan Mountains, the most famous of which are: linden sauerkraut, legumes, ram in the style of hajduk, lamb and lamb, various types of pies and cheeses, dishes with mushrooms ... event are the local community Temska and the Tourist Organization of Pirot, under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

The Pirot Cheese and Yellow Cheese Festival is held in September in Pirot and lasts one day. Here you can try and buy different types of cheese and other dairy products, especially the famous Pirot cheese, from different producers

Rafting through Nishava is a sports and entertainment event, which takes place on August 12, the International Youth Day. Hundreds of people from Pirot with their boats, inner tubes and other vessels participate and enjoy the two-hour descent through Nishava, from the village of Polska Rzhana to the Big Bridge in the center of Pirot. At the end of the voyage, the rafting participants are waiting for music and refreshments in the form of goulash, which is being prepared on the promenade Kay near Nishava.

The organizer is the Sports Center Pirot under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

Every year in mid-August rafting of Vladika's plate is organized by rubber boats on the mountain river Visochitsa, through one of the most beautiful canyons, Vladika's plate. It starts from the village of Rsovac, where a group of adventurers go down by dinghy without a motorboat to the villages of Pakleštica and Zavojsko Lake, while the other group reaches this place on foot. The participants were accommodated in a camp in the village of Pakleshtitsa.

Organizers are Kung Fu Club "Black Cobra" from Pirot, Sports Center Pirot and TO Pirot, under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

The biggest music event in Pirot is the International Folklore Festival, which is held every year in August, lasts four days and brings together several folk ensembles from around the world. The event begins with a ceremonial parade of participants through the city, all the way to the Youth Stadium, where participants present themselves and show their skills. This festival is especially popular among the inhabitants of Pirovac because they get to know the traditional foreign games, music and costumes. The organizer is the House of Culture in Pirot under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

Folklore societies from Pirot - Folklore ensemble of the House of Culture Pirot and KUD "Dukat" also organize their annual Revival concerts every year in December and June, which are held in the House of Culture Pirot and in the House of the Army.

The Refreshment Festival is a music festival of international authorship with guest groups from Serbia. It is held in the summer in the area of the medieval fortress of Pirot Kale and is very popular among young people from Pirot. It aims to promote contemporary music and pirate bands.

The organizer is the Association of Citizens "Refreshment" under the auspices of the city of Pirot.

The Book and Graphic Salon is the largest cultural event in Pirot, established in 2001, where Serbian publishers present and organize literary evenings of writers and poets, both local and from other cities in Serbia. The fair lasts seven days and takes place in February. This is one of the four largest fairs of its kind in the country.

The organizers are the House of Culture Pirot and the National Library Pirot.

Pirot Cultural Summer is a cultural event that takes place in the summer, in July and August. It contains cultural programs, which include literary and theatrical works, literary evenings, concerts, film performances, art workshops, exhibitions ... These programs are held in several places in the city: in cultural institutions, stadiums, town square, Kay promenade and Pirot Fortress ... Organizer is the city of Pirot.

The Stara Planina Research Camp in the village of Temska brings together students of biology, chemistry, tourism and geography from the University of Serbia, as well as local and foreign natural societies, high school students and volunteers from more than 20 countries to get acquainted with different cultures, dying villages, education for permaculture and ecotourism. This camp is held in July, lasts several days and coincides with the festival of Stara Planina dishes, so foreigners can get acquainted with the local gastronomy.

Organizers are: Association "Temska", NIDSBE "Josip Pancic", DBI "Branislav Bukurov", IID "Mladen Karaman", BD "Sava Petrovich", BID "Yosif Pancic" and the Local Community Temska.
